HISTORY OF MUSIC VIDEOS
1992-2004
INCREASE IN DIRECTORS
In November 1992, MTV began listing directors with the artist and song credits, reflecting the fact that the amount of released music videos was constantly increasing. Many directors such as Chris Cunningham, Hype Williams, Michael Gondry and Spike Jonze all reached the peak in their careers in this time by bringing a unique vision and style to the video that they had directed. Some of these directors also went on to direct films.
Two of the videos directed by Romanek in 1995 are notable for being two of the three most expensive music videos of all time: Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream", which allegedly cost $7 million to produce, and Madonna's "Bedtime Story", which cost a reported $5 million.
