SPIKE JONZE

Spike Jonze, age 45, is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor, whose work includes music videos, commercials, film and television. Jonze is well known for his music video collaborations with Fatboy Slim, Weezer, Beastie Boys, and Björk. His work with Fatboy Slim gained him a lot of interest. For the music video to Fatboy Slim's song 'Praise You', Spike Jonze assembled a group of dancers to perform to the song outside a Westwood California Movie Theatre and then recorded the performance. The result of this filming was a huge success and the music video recieved awards for Best Direction, Breakthrough and Best Choreography. Spike Jonze has worked with many popular artists such as Kanye West and JayZ directing the music video to Kanye Wests' song 'Otis'. Pitchfork Media named the video amongst the best of the year. As of January 2015, Billboard named the video as one of the 20 best of the 2010s so far. Spike Jonze also directed the music video to 'Sabotage' by the Beastie Boys. The video for "Sabotage" was nominated for Video of the Year, Best Group Video, Breakthrough Video, Best Direction in a Video, and Viewer's Choice at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards.

Jonze has explored making different styles of music video shots in different locations. Usually his music videos are shot in an urban environment such as in “Sabotage”. This is because the artists he works with are in the rap or dance genre. This is hugely popular in urban environments. Jonze usually takes a situation and manipulates a part of the video within a realistic environment. For example, “Fatboy Slim – Weapons of Choice”; where Christopher Walken is seen in normal clothes in a normal hotel lobby. He progresses into a dance routine throughout the building and becomes energetic and climaxes to him flying wall to wall. In this example, we can find high credibility transformed into a surreal video through the movement of the actor.

The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved

The video was directed by Marc Klasfeld. It was released on the band's YouTube channel and other music channels. The singer, Danny, is singing about how he is waiting for a girl to come and meet him. Towards the end of the music video, there are time lapsed scenes of the days passing by. We watch Danny growing older, which we can see by the use of a larger beard. This music video was a success as it reached over 78 million views.
