ICONIC CD COVER

Below are some iconic CD Covers from our Indie Pop Genre. It is important that we look at the Iconic CD Covers from our chosen genre so that we can grasp a variety of ideas to use for our own CD Cover.

Tom Odell is an English singer-songwriter. He released his debut extended play,Songs from Another Love, in 2012 and won the BRITs Critics' Choice Award in early 2013. His debut studio album,Long Way Down, was issued on 24 June 2013. Tom Odell is listed as an artist from the Indie Pop Genre which is the genre that we are creating a music video for. The image used for the cover of his album 'Long Way Down' is a very plain and simple shot. The acamera is angled to look down the street that Tom Odell is standing on to possibly conote the album name. A focus pull is also used to blur the background so that our attention is on Tom. Tom is dressed in very indie style clothing with messy hair to represent his Indie Pop genre. The positioning of the text on this digipak is ideal and very simple which makes it a conventional feature of this album cover, it is located at the top of digipak in a place where it is clear and easy for the audience to read. The typography is very simple as only black and white font has been used, Tom Odell is written in black and Long Way Down is written in white showing a contrasting effect.
Charli XCX is an English singer and songwriter. She released her debut major label studio album, True Romance, in April 2013. Her music is also listed as the Indie Pop genre as well as other genres such as Pop Punk , Dark Pop and Electropop. The digipak cover for her album 'True Romance' makes uses the contrast of dark and light colours to make it stand out and grab the attention of the public eye. The artist is crouched down against a plain white background in all black clothing. Multiple colours have been placed all over her body and they look like strikes of electricity which could connote her electropop genre. Her body is also encompassed with stars and glitter which could suggest that the artist is trying to imply that she is different and 'out of this world' which connoted the Indie Pop genre of being unique and different. The artist is wearing all black, with dark eye makeup as well as bid backcombed dark hair. The use of mise en scene here creates a dark and grunger like vibe which portrays the Dark Pop genre that Charli XCX plays a part in.

Settle is the album by the duo Disclosure and was released in May 2013 by Island Records. A popular song that is included in this album is “Latch”. We can see a monochrome colour for the title of Disclosure, which is very simplistic. However, it is effective because there are two contrasting colours, black and white, which stand out from the background colour: an orange warmed tone. Disclosure are an English electronic music duo and are two brothers called Guy and Howard Lawrence. As we can see on the album cover, there are two little boys sitting on a chair. These boys may represent the brothers when they were younger because they look similar and look around the same age. This gives the audience a personal insight into the band since they are using or representing a photo of their childhood. Although, Disclosure have not used a present day band, which goes against Andrew Goodwin’s theory of record companies wanting close ups of the artists face. However, this reflects on their music and in their music videos, we rarely see their face. Also, when we do see Disclosure’s faces in music videos, they are covered up by an iconic white drawing. This white drawing is also shown on Disclosure’s album cover as they have been drawn over the two little boy’s faces. This makes the artist and album very memorable as well as being iconic.
